Again thank you for politely explaining my shortcomings in understanding
what I'm using :)
I had copied and pasted the example found at
http://www.lilypond.org/doc/v2.19/Documentation/notation/ancient-notation
and then modified that without really understanding what I'm doing.
Things are much clearer now.
