Like Urs said, the <<{}\\{}>> syntax implicitly creates multiple voices, but if you just take out the two back slashes <<{}{}>>, no new voices are created and you will remain in the main voice (i.e., the stem will be point in the correct, non-forced direction--down) and the dynamics will be attached like you thought they would.

Hi guys,

I'm trying to learn how to use lilypond to typeset orchestral material.
Handling large projects is fun but good documentation regarding this is hard
to come by. I'm still a lilypond novice and my Google-Fu has let me down, I
need help.

I'm using my own orchestration which i engraved in Sibelius a while back.
