Thanks. But I specifically mentioned I am drawing my own stencil, not using a font glyph.

Digging deeper, the answer lies in flag-styles.scm, where can be found a recursive function buildflag that recursively draws the supplied stencil in the right offsets according to the supplied duration. So I nearly have the solution I need.
