there's a hint that if you start a voice context with \cueDuring, you have
to explicitely create it with \new Voice.
So I ended up with the following:

dux = {
a4 a a a
}
comes = \new Voice {
\cueDuring #"dux" #UP {R1}
e4 e e e
}
\addQuote "dux" { \dux }
\score {
<< \new Staff { \dux } \new Staff { \comes } >>
\layout {

\CueVoice
\override NoteHead.color = #blue
}
}
}
