Is there a way to avoid keeping these files? lilypond doesn’t have an
option for that AFAICT.

That sounds strange. These are intermediate PS files past to
Ghostscript for conversion to PDF. They should be removed at
the end of the compilation. Are you sure that it's not a one-time
failure, i.e. if you delete it and recompile, it really reappears
every time?
Did you try with 2.23.9? There were some changes in that area.
