I've done this a few times when working with lout:

lout -o mydoc.lout

And cried shortly thereafter...  :-( I would like to request:

1) that no file is opened/truncated for output unless the arguments given are
   satisfactory ie. arguments are validated before necessary I/O is setup

2) lout refuses to create an output file with .lout extension (and maybe others)
