I don't think this route makes sense.  If you want to target multiple
formats your best bet (in the long term) is SGML+DSSSL/XML+XSL.  There
was a lengthy discussion on the list about this an year ago which I
encourage you to read.

As for my vision of how Lout fits this picture - I think Lout could be
a good *back*-end to target a DSSSL engine to.  I perceive Lout's
programmability as its greatest strength that should be capitalized
on aggressively.

Unfortunately, some DSSSL features are hard to map to the current
implementation of Lout (IC's, different spacing model).  All this is
solvable, but I guess that nobody have enough time to invest into
improving this.  Any student out there looking for a nice thesis
project?  ;-)
