Since Lout has a very small user community there's no 3rd party
references, like those for TeX (that are in abundance).  

However the documentation bundled with Lout is usually rated very high
by people.  Expert's Guide, while somewhat terse, describes all the
important things you need to know to hack low-level Lout yourself.
The last chapter (examples) explains most of the gotchas and
demonstrates real-life techniques.

While bookf might seem to be too big to grasp easily, the fact is that
about 80% of the code is *highly* stereotypic (for reportf in 3.10
(last time I counted) the ratio was ~120 lines of "interesting" code
out of ~900).  Even if one have to start from scratch, dsf provides a
good infrastructure to base a layout on.

PS: Hmm, I believe I still has an old code of mine for doing running
    headers for dictionaries (frist/last words on page) around.  Will
    dig through my archives.
