Numbering and aligned displays

Hello,

I've run across a couple of problems with Lout in the couple of weeks
I've been using it, and I can't track down answers in the documentation.
Any suggestions or pointers to the bits of documentation I missed would
be appreciated.

First, numbering. Arabic numbering seems to work perfectly, but any
other form (Roman, UCAlpha...) doesn't. Most recently, I've had problems
with labeling the appendices on a report - I keep getting messages
along the lines of:

  99,31: unresolved cross reference @UCAlpha&&1
  99,31: unresolved cross reference @UCAlpha&&2

And appendices A and B appear as "appendix ??". In this case, appendices
C and onwards appear correctly. However, if I use, say Roman instead of
UCAlpha for the @AppendixNumbers option in the set up file, none of them
work - I get unresolved cross references on @Roman&&<everything>, and
all the appendices are labeled ??.

The above behaviour seems to appear everywhere I've tried to number
things with anything other than Arabic. It happens both in the Debian
unstable Lout 3.19 package, and in my home built 3.17 and 3.20.

My other problem involves numbered displays - I can't persuade them to
work with more than nine items. If, for example, I put:

@ND 1 @ND 2 @ND 3 @ND 4 @ND 5 @ND 6 @ND 7 @ND 8 @ND 9 @ND { 10 }

I get (however many runs I do):

  lout file "test.lout":
       3,1: unresolved cross reference @NumDispCounterMarker&&preceding
  lout file "test.lout.ld" (from "test.lout" line 2):
    182,10: unresolved cross reference  @NumDispCounterMarker&&1259.test.lout.1

With the last line repeated 9 times. This works if I simply remove the
last item (@ND 10).

Any help, and especially references to documentation I've missed, would
be very much appreciated!

John
