Thanks for clarifying that, the code in question is a few years old and was written/tested with lout 3.25...
It may have been different long ago. Unfortunately, Lout is not clever enough to recognize when illegal PostScript is being passed through, so it fails to complain when something inside x or y is wrong. You could type "peanut butter flavoured ice cream" inside x or y and not get an error message.
