Upgrade kernels in BSPs?, yes many times.  It's simple if you have a
known good kernel.

Only if someone (a vendor) can be bothered to merge out that platform
that is known to work.  There is an imx31ads in the Savannah LTIB, I'm
not sure if this is similar enough to be useful?

You don't say what they are really?  For example what have you done
(bullet point steps are needed).  For example I've no idea why you've
chosesn 2.6.22, is this a patched kernel known to work? otherwise why
would you use something that is relatively old? this confuses me.

it's a bit outdated but the principles are okay.

This is something the board vendor needs to help you with.  Quite often
the vanilla kernels need to be patched to work.
