Interesting.  If you search for "Classical Error messages and solutions under Ubuntu", you'll see your exact error (where mconf is missing) and a solution.


I still don't understand why LTIB thinks you are root, so outside of trying "../ltib --no-sudo" I don't have any other ideas for you...
