I went ahead and made the change in 4c76fd500c59f0fb38027f6c602641b1b79ae505.

I think you'll be pleased at the elimination of extra work in
checking/clearing write_offset.  Also I found that once offset was in msg.w,
there was no need to marshal the result to msg.w.len for output and that
msg.w.offset could be used directly as output, leaving msg.w.len as purely the
input length of dataptr.
