Yes it's weird my ping times with ppp are like:

64 bytes from 192.168.0.4: icmp_seq=1 ttl=64 time=209 ms
64 bytes from 192.168.0.4: icmp_seq=2 ttl=64 time=189 ms
64 bytes from 192.168.0.4: icmp_seq=3 ttl=64 time=179 ms
64 bytes from 192.168.0.4: icmp_seq=4 ttl=64 time=169 ms
64 bytes from 192.168.0.4: icmp_seq=5 ttl=64 time=159 ms
64 bytes from 192.168.0.4: icmp_seq=6 ttl=64 time=149 ms
64 bytes from 192.168.0.4: icmp_seq=7 ttl=64 time=139 ms
64 bytes from 192.168.0.4: icmp_seq=8 ttl=64 time=129 ms
64 bytes from 192.168.0.4: icmp_seq=9 ttl=64 time=119 ms
64 bytes from 192.168.0.4: icmp_seq=10 ttl=64 time=109 ms
64 bytes from 192.168.0.4: icmp_seq=11 ttl=64 time=99.9 ms
64 bytes from 192.168.0.4: icmp_seq=12 ttl=64 time=89.9 ms
64 bytes from 192.168.0.4: icmp_seq=13 ttl=64 time=79.9 ms
64 bytes from 192.168.0.4: icmp_seq=14 ttl=64 time=69.9 ms
64 bytes from 192.168.0.4: icmp_seq=15 ttl=64 time=59.9 ms
64 bytes from 192.168.0.4: icmp_seq=16 ttl=64 time=49.9 ms
64 bytes from 192.168.0.4: icmp_seq=17 ttl=64 time=289 ms
64 bytes from 192.168.0.4: icmp_seq=18 ttl=64 time=279 ms
64 bytes from 192.168.0.4: icmp_seq=19 ttl=64 time=269 ms

notice it decreases with 10 or 20 ms (that's 1 or two ecos clock ticks)
at each iteration. There's a bug somewhere for sure.
I did not test PPP much and I don't know if it used to be like this.
