More likely: debugging. Assertions are very fast in runtime compared to
debugprintf()s.
(or extremely slow if they fail ;-)

A ping should take about 10msec or less, though it heavily depends
on the medium (serial, eth), its utilisation/traffic and your host platform
(CPU load?, many RTOSes can measure this)

Maybe you should try to use a packet sniffer like Ethereal and the buildin
debug functions of lwip.
