I'm surprised I had it disabled even though it should be enabled by default, didn't even notice.

But it seems this has done the trick, and it is working reliably now for over an hour.

Could you try enabling SYS_LIGHTWEIGHT_PROT ? Update your port if
necessary to add critical section protection.
