Summary:  static build didnt work

Original Submission:  compiling static binaries with 2.04rc1-7 cvs source went 
wrong.

./configure -> make depend -> make static runs into:

verified with linux (glibc 2.2.4/gcc 2.95.3) and cygwin under win2k.
