Details:

They can be replaced by strerror, attached a patch which
checks for both functions and provides defines to be
used in magiclib_stub.c but I lack the knowledge to
implement strerror in magiclib_stub.c.

Strerror is already thread-safe on Solaris, I do not know
the situation on NetBSD.
