eh, I changed my mind. it's more important that this be correct. I'll work on an optimization later when I have time to think about it more, possibly reorganize storage a bit (it only becomes annoyingly slow when you have tens of thousands of versions in your graph). I've committed all of eric's patches (thanks!) to my depot, for now.
