Strange.  Are you sure /stuff exists and is writeable by you?  If
that's not it, the output when you pass --debug to monotone, and the
output of 'strace'ing monotone (_without_ --debug, preferably, since
their output will get mixed up) would be useful...

And if you find the problem, please do let us know, so we at least
know what the problem was and have a chance at fixing the error
message :-).
