Because monotone has it's own protocol, and because that makes it
possible to run it as a completely standalone server with no
dependency with any other software. More about it further down.

thoma> I wasn't able to open that service. Perhaps you can

Uhmm, what do you mean? Do you need to open it in a firewall or
something like that? I'd turn to the manual of the hard- or software
that you need to adjust if I was you.

Or are you asking how to start a monotone server? This is what
'monotone serve --help' tells me:

     serve ADDRESS[:PORTNUMBER] PATTERN ...
listen on ADDRESS and serve the specified branches to connecting clients

There's a better description in the manual.

thoma> b) is that also possible, if don't have an root account (as it
thoma> is the case)

Yes. The monotone server can run on any account, including your own.
I use a dedicated account for my serving.

thoma> c) how can I use ssh instead of the 5253 port?

Not with the standard release, but you can use monotone to check out
the branch net.venge.monotone.ssh, which has such functionality
(there's been a lot of commits to it lately, so I've no idea how well
it works).

thoma> 2. cvs
thoma> Is it possible to export a monotone database to an cvs-Repository?

Yes, in the branch net.venge.monotone.cvssync. I've never used it
myself, so I've no clue how it works.

thoma> Is there a manual for this?

No. Unless Christof wrote something lately.

Was this soon enough? :-)

Cheers,
