See the end of my reply to Markus earlier -- I think the right way to
deal with this problem is to have a "fat" distribution that contains
all the right versions of all our dependent libraries, structured like
the .library-build branch (our source code in a subdirectory &
unmodified upstream sources in sibling directories).
