I considered that. Part of the point of the current renaming scheme is
to guard against filling up the disk halfway thru an update. When the
staging area is on the same drive, the disk will fill up during the
staging writes, not during the rename. If the staging area is on a
different drive, it can fill up during the copy, leaving the workspace
in an inconsistent state.
