Follow-up Comment #1:

Makefile.in is created by automake which is called from autogen.sh.  If the
file isn't there then something went wrong in autogen.sh, not in configure.

Post the exact command you used to invoke autogen.sh and a log of the
results.

For example, for csh

'sh autogen.sh |& tee build.log'
