Follow-up Comment #3:

imagesc is a core function in Octave and in Matlab
(http://www.mathworks.com/help/techdoc/ref/funcalpha.html).  imresize is part
of the graphics toolbox.  There is an Octave-Forge package which implements
the graphics toolbox from Matlab.  See the function reference here
(http://octave.sourceforge.net/image/overview.html).  imresize is a function
in that package, and they appear to overload imagesc as well with their own
version.  I would install the Octave-Forge package if you need extra image
functions beyond the core (image imagesc imfinfo imread imshow imwrite)
