Follow-up Comment #5, bug #31287 (project octave):

Yes, I understand that it was working as you expect in a 3.0.x.

However, indexed assignment in Octave has been completely reworked since
then.  For the most part the rewrite cleaned up and simplified many
complicated special cases with much simpler rules that are faster and
generally provide better compatibility.  What Jaroslav is saying is that we
don't want to go back to the previous jumble of ad-hoc special cases.  So if
this is to be fixed, we need to have some kind of general rule that can be
applied.  If you want to see this fixed, then help us understand what the
underlying rule is.  It would be helpful to provide test cases as well and
show us what the results are in Octave, as he suggested.
