Follow-up Comment #44, bug #31305 (project octave):

The attached changeset should fix this performance issue.

I would appreciate if someone able to reproduce the bug could test these
changes.

I would also appreciate if someone could run the dump_demos tests and check
the results. My free time this period is quite limited.
