Follow-up Comment #21, bug #31468 (project octave):

I expanded/generalized my experimental patch a bit:
  * recognizing multi-dimensional string/char matrices, e.g. ["abcd","efg"]
  * adding support for the multi-lines in glps_renderer::draw_text(),
identical newline addition code from what I have graphics.cc
  * rendering "" in glps_renderer::draw_text() and
text::properties::update_text_extent() if the value is neither a
string/charmatrix nor cellstr

Attached is rev2 of the experimental patch.

I believe Philip's txt-eng-ft.cc.diff patch cleans up the ft_render missing
glyph messages.
