Follow-up Comment #7, bug #34734 (project octave):

Please try attached new patch.

The error you saw is fixed, try-catch is restored, a fix added for yet another
problem I hit (eol_char in subfunc split_by), and I added %!test lines to the
last two tests you added so now they're counted too.

I think strread's functionality is stretched to the limit now.

I didn't add tests as you requested, partly because the new functionality is
included in the other tests, mostly because str2double() has to be patched
first (see bug #34713) before I can proceed.
