Follow-up Comment #9, bug #33869 (project octave):

Its unexpected, but for pdfwrite output I do see that difference between using
%g and omitting the "set format" statement and using the default (again %g). 
I've attached two files for anyone who is interested (the displayed "qt"
terminal does not show a difference).
