Follow-up Comment #7, bug #38488 (project octave):
Here are some further tests. My octave (without zlib compiled) loads '-v4' and
'-v6' version saved Matlab mat data files, the rest fails.
GNU Octave, version 3.6.4
octave:1> load thermometer
error: load: invalid element type = 15
error: load: trouble reading binary file 'thermometer'
octave:1> load thermometer_v4
octave:2> load thermometer_v6
octave:3> load thermometer_v7
error: load: invalid element type = 15
error: load: trouble reading binary file 'thermometer_v7'
octave:3> load thermometer_v73
Warning! ***HDF5 library version mismatched error***
Aborted (core dumped)
