Follow-up Comment #37, bug #39305 (project octave):

Looking at it some more, it seems somewhat complex with all the conversions
between byte arrays and strings.  Is all that conversion necessary?  Also, can
we use a switch on the key sequences?  How about the attached changeset
instead?  It seems to work for me.  If you agree that this is OK, I'll push
it.
