We might try asking the llvm folks if there is a better way.  I spent a
a short while on their web site and did not find anything useful. Their
handling of updates and API changes suggests that they are not all
that "user friendly."   So, I think that looking in the libs directory is
the best choice.  It should, it appears, always have the .so files.
Also, an option to use the static libraries could be coded, but I would
vote against that unless someone finds a definite reason why it is
needed.
