Follow-up Comment #2, bug #40064 (project octave):

Yes, it's still broken.  You said "demo text 12", did you mean


demo ("legend", 12)


That is the code that shows off the problem.  I've uploaded a screenshot which
shows TeX interpreter still on after running the above command.
