Follow-up Comment #54, bug #40436 (project octave):

This problem is certainly a nuisance.  Since my first
suggestion seems not to work how about keeping a
corrected copy of the 4.8.1 bits/stl_algo.h and reference it
if the version of gcc is 4.8.1.

Or, at least, provide a script to be run as root
which applies the patch to the system stl_algo.h file?
Users who can su to root can just run it, others can
try to get their sysadmin to do it (in many cases the
sysadmin will, of course, refuse...).

If any procedure is chosen such that users could build
a system containing this bug, the build MUST fail unconditionally.

By the way, is there really no way to undefine a template
and then redefine it?
