Follow-up Comment #2, bug #40723 (project octave): I see no way to make !shellcommand work without giving up ! as the logical not operator. It's unacceptable to me to introduce inconsistencies like "! is logical not except if it appears at the beginning of a statement". Do people really use !shellcommand frequently?
