Follow-up Comment #1, bug #41155 (project octave):

(didn't know a binary 3.8.0 Mac OSX installer was already up)

"Octave was not compiled with Java interface" just means what it says.
In any case you'll have no spreadsheet write support; you need to be able to
invoke Java methods for that.

If you have io-2.0.1 installed (try with "pkg install -noauto" to avoid
PKG_ADD errors, currently under review), you DO (uhm, should) have good read
support, compatible with what Java would give you, but only for OOXML (.xlsx,
Excel 2007 and up), ODS 1.2 (OpenOffice.org/LibreOffice) and gnumeric.

I'm only the io package maintenance dude; I know little or nothing about OSX
Octave binaries or OSX itself (although my partner and our daughter almost
live in it, yet I'm happy with Windows & Linux) so I can't help you there.

If you get unexpected warnings or errors with the io package please report
them quick as I plan a new io bug fix release Very Soon (maybe even tomorrow)
