Follow-up Comment #1:

Thanks for your bug report and patch. Unfortunately the audio package is
largely unmaintained and has not seen a release in almost 5 years.

The good news is Octave will be gaining much improved audio support in a
future version without the need of the audio package. Once that happens the
audio package will not be needed any longer and will probably be removed from
Octave Forge.

All that said, I can't confirm whether your patch works or not, or whether
it's specific to Mac OS or not.
