Follow-up Comment #9, bug #39179 (project octave):

No I was thinking in the GUI itself, no need to communicate something back to
the interpreter. The GUI now has a preference to launch an external editor,
separately from the way the editor is launched in CLI mode. If the GUI has no
scintilla it could simply launch the external editor.
