Follow-up Comment #4, bug #43526 (project octave):
I took a quick look at the GNU Texinfo source to see what compression schemes
it supports.
It appears to handle files named .gz, .xz, .bz2, .lz, .lzma, meaning it will
try appending those extensions in turn after .info. Complicates the doc.m
logic a bit more unfortunately.
Also worth reminding here that compressed Info currently does not work with
the GUI help browser.
