Follow-up Comment #2:

Confirmed on Windows 7 w a 64-bit and a 32-bit with both 3.9.0+ and 4.1.0+.
Double-clicking the side border did the trick as well.

The annoying affect is that neither resizing the detached pane nor moving it
around is possible anymore.
Docking and undocking doesn't help, unless the pane is docked on top of
another pane (as a tab).
