There hasn't been any new information on this bug and no confirmations, so I'm
closing it as invalid. This is likely not a bug in Octave but rather a system
configuration problem.

If you are still unable to run Octave without this crash on startup, on 14.04
or any newer version of Ubuntu, please try reporting a bug against the Ubuntu
package of Octave.
