Follow-up Comment #2, bug #31761 (project octave):
The problem is caused by "set hidden3d" line in
__go_draw_axes__.m
(similar to bug 39585 <https://savannah.gnu.org/bugs/?39585>).
I do not know how to solve it, but it seems that
if the graphics object has a color (edgecolor?) property assigned,
hidden_removal should be set to false.
