Follow-up Comment #15, bug #44174 (project octave): I had already done a variety of TERM finagling, but the xterm idea I hadn't tried. Alas, no luck. From both an xterm (TERM=xterm) and a Mac terminal (TERM=xterm-256color), the behavior is the same; changing to TERM=aquaterm or TERM=blech does nothing different. In all cases, the TERM value is successfully delivered to the remote host.
