Follow-up Comment #2, bug #44455 (project octave):

"regression" ok, that's somewhat arguable. 
IMO the regression is that the workspace viewer became unusable when it is the
most useful/needed, i.e., while debugging.

BTW it's not only updating the workspace pane that takes time while scripts
are running; the directory pane is also a hog in this respect, maybe even
worse, continuously updating when Octave changes directory in scripts.
