Follow-up Comment #6, bug #45779 (project octave):

I thought I had already reported that I tested this in Matlab, but just in
case, imwrite in Matlab creates an 8-bit-per-sample indexed grayscale image if
the input array is uint8 and even if there is no colormap argument. Octave
currently requires the colormap argument to create an indexed image. This is
the incompatibility to fix in this bug report.
