Follow-up Comment #6, bug #45779 (project octave): I thought I had already reported that I tested this in Matlab, but just in case, imwrite in Matlab creates an 8-bit-per-sample indexed grayscale image if the input array is uint8 and even if there is no colormap argument. Octave currently requires the colormap argument to create an indexed image.
