Follow-up Comment #8, bug #46103 (project octave): Ok, the argument of compatibility (with matlab) is valid. Does matlab nowadays implement diagonal class? If not matlab's behaviour might change in future. What is behaviour of matlab for the case of the sparse matrixes. Apart from the current behaviour, all mentioned solutions are acceptable for a mathematician (at least this one).
