Follow-up Comment #7, bug #45214 (project octave):

Any progress with this bug? Is it still relevant to your use case? If not then
we might as well close it as won't fix. The hydra build of Octave is still
succeeding by installing one font and setting the FONTCONFIG_FILE environment
variable to a config file pointing to that font. This should be enough to
allow fontconfig to work. It seems like requiring Octave or mxe to
automatically do anything more is out of scope.
