Follow-up Comment #3, bug #47272 (project octave):

OT: It sounds like the fminsearch function of the interval package could be of
interest to you.

It has an OutputFcn option (maybe the core  fminsearch has as well) which can
be used to gain information about the tested values. Above link show an
example which plots these values as sets.
