Follow-up Comment #15, bug #47346 (project octave):

John: This helps, but:
Running: octave -f --no-gui --debug
now works, but: octave --no-gui --debug
fails with:

Entering state 36
Next token is token END_OF_INPUT ()
Shifting token END_OF_INPUT ()
Entering state 111
Reducing stack by rule 2 (line 403):
   $1 = nterm simple_list ()
   $2 = token END_OF_INPUT ()
Stack now 0
error: graphics_toolkit: fltk toolkit is not available
error: unhandled execution exception
error: execution of /home/godfrey/.octaverc failed
error: trying to make my way to a command prompt
>>
===========================
My .octaverc is:
graphics_toolkit('fltk');

If I remove the graphics_toolkit('fltk'); line,
startup is OK.

But then if I try to run graphics_toolkit('fltk');
I get the same error.

Running graphics_toolkit();
Works and gives 'qt'

So, you have found a source of this problem...
